Louis Theroux – Documentarian/Broadcaster

Years ago while flicking through the channels late one night while I couldn’t sleep I came across a Documentary titled ‘The Most Hated Family In America’. It was being hosted by BBC broadcaster Louis Theroux.
Whilst I was outraged by this family and ‘church’s’ behaviour I was also struck by the professionalism and style of the host Louis Theroux.
Just yesterday I saw the follow up to that documentary and this was titled ‘The Most Hated Family In America In Crisis’.
This got me watching a few other documentaries by Mr. Theroux. So I thought I’d just give a little background on him and name just a few of his specials.
I find him to be incredibly patient and empathetic while interviewing his subjects. Even when his subjects are some of the most terrible people one could meet.
I find his style easy to watch and really engaging.
Born in 1970 Louis Theroux comes from a long line of writers and novelists. It’s obviously in the blood.
His father is travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, his brother is writer and TV presenter Marcel Theroux, his uncle Alexander is a novelist and poet, his cousin Louis Theroux (yes the one daring Jennifer Aniston) Is a screenwriter/director and actor. The whole extended family seems to be in the writing game in some form.

Louis was a correspondent on Michael Moore’s TV Nation before being placed with BBC where he had two shows Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends and When Louis Met..
Louis has been nominated for 3 BAFTA awards and winning 2, and been nominated for an Emmy.
He now does many documentaries on a vast range of topics.
These include, the porn industry, gambling, violence in Johannesburg, violence in Lagos, the city addicted to crystal meth, America’s Medicated Children and many more.
Below is a list of some of the documentaries I’ve seen, some I’ve partly seen and others I’m about to see.

The Most Hated Family In America & The Most Hated Family In America In Crisis. Both I’ve seen and it is about a look inside the Westboro Baptist Church. Most of which comprises of one family, The Phelp’s.

Behind Bars – a look inside San Quentin prison. I’ve seen the beginning of this and the end. Haven’t been able to find the middle. Very interesting!

Miami Mega Jail Part 1 & 2 – I’m in the middle of watching part 1.

Louis and the Nazi’s – going to be watching this.

A Place For Pedophiles – another on my to watch list.

I want to be able to see all of his documentaries as I find him fascinating to watch.
Plus it’s a good way to open your eyes and learn.
If your interested in journalism, broadcast tv or just learning about issues I highly recommend watching one of his specials.
